Introducing...

Every month, we introduce one of the Kingston Wheelers and Ben Elliot is in the saddle for August 2007. A recent joiner to the club, he's been riding for ages but recently got more into cycling.

Name: Ben Elliott

Age: 24

Significant Others: Girlfriend, Claire

Date you joined the Club: June 2007

What made you start cycling? My dad's a keen cyclist so I've been cycling for as long as I can remember.

Why did you join Kingston Wheelers? Wanted a local club that was friendly but fierce at the same time. Also attracted by the good website and forum facility.

What bike do you ride? I ride a 2005 Specialized Tarmac Comp for training and racing and my Decathlon 7.1 for commuting and going to the shops.

Give us a brief cycling background: I've been recreationally cycling for as long as I can remember, however it was only until my younger brother bought a semi-nice Ribble last year that I wanted to go one better and bought my Specialized. Riding that bike put a grin on my face ear to ear and I've been hooked since.

What was your best performance or ride? Very little to choose from so far, but a 23:09 on the G10/42 remains my best.

What was your worst day on the bike? Cycling from Sheffield to my home town Congleton, 45 very hilly miles over the Peak District on my big heavy Decathlon in scorching heat, having done zero training, with not enough food and water....

Who is your favourite pro or inspiration? Favourite pro is Tom Boonen, not especially for his cycling ability but he's a dude and loves (loved) his world champion stripes almost as much as me (no I haven't earned mine yet) My favourite inspiration is my dad who is much too fast for an old fogey and doesn't need an expensive bike to do it.

What is your favourite race food? Pre-race - a humongous bowl of cereal; Mid-race - cereal bars; Post-race - a humongous bowl of cereal.

Where is your favourite cycling location? For convenience I like Richmond Park but nothing beats the hills of France.

Most likely to say: "Brew me!"

Least likely to say: "Hi, I'd like to buy a compact chainset with 170mm cranks and a 14-25 cassette please."
