Introducing...
Every month, we introduce some of the Kingston Wheelers and sometimes feature a bonus interview. So whilst Jamie Wasley is here July 2010, here's Cervélo Test Team's Joao Correia. Once a pro in Portugal, he moved to New York to take up a job in publishing but overweight, he decided to get back into cycling and within a short space of time he'd turned pro.
Name: Joao Correia
Age: 35
Any significant others? Wife, Tiiu McGuire, son Liam Emanuelle and daughter Anna St. Clair.
What was your first bikeThe brand was Oliva and it was a tank. My first real racing bike that I can remember was an Alan when I was 10 or so.
What bike do you ride? I ride a Cervelo
Give us a brief cycling backgroundMy father got me my first racing bike when I was six and took me to a bike race. I started racing when I was six and stopped when I was 21. Then went to college and got a job. One day I was fat and wanted to loose weight so I started riding and then racing locally, then racing as an amateur at the national level before turning pro again in 2008 with an American Continental Team called Bissell. I did that and worked in publishing for two years and then this year had the opportunity to go to the Cervelo TestTeam and do it full time.
What was your best performance or ride?My best performance is hard to pin point. I would say that the ones that stand out are my world championship participations.
What was your worst day on the bike? Any day that you can't finish is a pretty bad day on the bike. But there was a stage in Castilla Y Leon this year that finished on a 20Km climb that was pretty bad. It rained, snowed and sleeted, luckily I finished.
Who is your favourite pro or inspiration? Eddy Merckx.
What is your favourite bike food? Pasta is right up there.
Where is your favourite cycling location? Chianti in Tuscany.
Most likely to say: I don't think you will print that!
Least likely to say: "Pass the ketchup".
One piece of advice: Dream, plan, then get to work.
Thanks to Gerry Rosen for landing the interview
