Introducing...
Every month, we introduce some of the Kingston Wheelers and Luke Wallis is here for July 2009. But occasionally we feature a rider from outside the club. Past interview candidates include Stuart O'Grady, Cervélo's Dan Lloyd and current British champion Kristian House.
Now appropriately enough for July here is Aussie Matthew Lloyd (Silence-Lotto). A team mate of Cadel Evans, Lloyd is known for his mountain climbing abilities and is a former national champion, you'll see the green and gold rings on his sleeves. He's also only been cycling for a few years but has risen up from beginner triathlete to become Evans's right-hand man in just a few years. Before cycling, he was a national Australian Ice Hockey champion and a top rower.
Name: Matt Lloyd
Age: 26
Any significant others: yeah, she's back in Italy.
What made you start cycling? I'd have to say watching it on television as a kid.
What was your first bike? First bike? Umm, my first real bike was a Trek Madone. I won a car in a raffle in a car in Australia and really wanted this bike so I sold the car and was fortunate enough to get a pretty good one.
What bike do you ride? A Canyon Ultimate SFX with Campagnolo Super Record. It's as good as it gets.
Give us a brief cycling background: I did a bit of triathlon after finishing university, mainly as a bit of fun. Then I started racing in Australia, mainly criteriums and shorter races. And eventually I worked my way up through the system.
What was your best performance or ride? I'd say winning the Australian championships in 2008 was a good day.
What was your worst day on the bike? That's gotta be the Amstel this year, I was on for a good ride but went down. I had several fractures and a lot of pain.
What is your favourite bike food? You get sick of the energy bars and gels. I dunno, I suppose that things that are a bit different, savoury things are always good. Chocolate.
Where is your favourite cycling location? I suppose the Dolomites in Italy are lovely. There are many brilliant places worldwide.
