Introducing...
Every month, we introduce one of the Kingston Wheelers and Ruhina Miller is here for February 2008 along with Gerry Rosen. She's relatively new to racing but has been through it all, from impressive rides to serious injury and in the same time, she's moved up to have a second category racing licence. Expect to hear more about Ruhina this year...
Name: Ruhina Miller
Age: 17
What made you start cycling?I've always taken part in sport but I was looking for a new challenge. I think I got more than I bargained for - but it's too addictive to stop! Besides, it turned out to be a lot safer than kickboxing.
Why did you join Kingston Wheelers?Going out on long rides is much more bearable when there's a whole bunch of friendly, supportive and motivated people to do it with. I think people underestimate the greatness of clubs they haven't heard of.
Date you joined the Club: November 2007.
What bike do you ride? A Merida Road 880-16 to train on because it’s heavy and almost completely useless. A Specialized Tarmac Comp Double to race on.
Give us a brief cycling background: I started racing as a youth in August 2006 and managed to move up into second category late last year as a junior. I cycle where I can (even with the shopping which is no joke) and go to the gym three times a week to train. Every year I try to fit in at least two charity rides – one for the British Heart Foundation and another for The Children’s Trust.
What was your best performance? My first ever race on the track which turned out to be a finale. I was the least experienced by far and could barely ride in a straight line – but came second overall; which wasn’t bad considering it was a mixed race.
What was your worst day on the bike? Landing on my back after a crash at Thruxton. I couldn’t walk for a few days after that and spent most of 2007 struggling to cycle a few miles because my back is now permanently damaged.
Who is your favourite pro or inspiration? I admire all cyclists who get out on their bike everyday to commute or train. It leaves me with no excuses not to do the same.
What is your favourite bike food? Jordans Frusli bars.
Where is your favourite cycling location? Anywhere in Surrey that isn’t full of people trying to run you off the road.
Most likely to say: "I'm injured" or "I'm on a diet"
Least likely to say: "I want a takeaway"
