Introducing...
Every month, we introduce one of the Kingston Wheelers and it's time for Sander Slager in May 2006. He's recently joined the club and is only here until the end of summer so his interview's been rushed into print. From Groenigen in Holland, he's been racing since the age of nine and eats stroopwafels.

Name: Sander Slager
Age: 23
Significant Others: My bike!
What made you start cycling? My brother joined races at the age of eight and that got me interested. I started racing when I was nine in the youth categories.
Why did you join Kingston Wheelers? I needed a club to train with because I hate to ride alone and I don't know my way around London. Well, not yet that is.
Date you joined the Club: April 2006.
What bike do you ride? I ride a red Stevens Stelvio with Ultegra and Mavic CXP pro rims.
Give us a brief cycling background: I have been Cycling since I was very young and did races every weekend ever since I was 9 years old. My broher and sister joined me and the whole family went with us during race weekends. After the youth I didn't go to Elite level because I like the pleasures in life as well!
What was your best performance? Two years ago I was fifth in the North Dutch Championships after a powerfull race. Last year I came in 15th and competed in the National Championships twice. In criteriums I often get top 15 places and sometimes top 10.
What was your worst day on the bike? Where to begin... ;) Bad days usually come with bad weather or not enough training before a race. I have thought about quitting once after the National Students Championships in my home town. I lost the group after just two laps in the rain...
Who is your favourite pro or inspiration? I like Erik Dekker, a very good Dutch racer who has had a lot of injuries in the past but managed to win beautifull races later in his career. Also Theo Bos, with who I know from Dutch races ages ago.
What is your favourite race food? Bananas! Can't go out without them ""Stroopwafels" will also do well, it's Dutch and you can ask me to bring some to training.
Where is your favourite cycling location? Richmond Park in London, the Alps in France, the south of Holland (more hills) and the north of Italy at Lake Como.
Most likely to say: "Could you talk slower, I'm Dutch."
Least likely to say: "No more beer for me please."
